In today’s post, we’ll be looking at UDT (Technical Inspection Authority) licences in the context of the various types of forklift trucks used in industry and other sectors. For which forklift trucks are UDT licences required, and for which are they not necessary? We invite you to read on.

What are UDT licences?

UDT licences are special certificates issued by the Technical Inspection Authority, which confirm the qualifications and skills of persons operating and supervising various types of technical equipment, including forklift trucks.

For which forklifts are UDT licences required?

UDT licences may be required when operating certain types of forklift trucks, particularly those used in industry, where worker safety and ensuring appropriate technical standards are crucial.

What falls under the UDT’s remit? All forklifts with a mechanical lifting system. The type of drive – whether combustion engine or electric – is irrelevant.

In small and medium-sized enterprises, forklifts with manual lifting systems are also frequently used. A manually operated mast-type pallet truck, equipped with manual drive and lifting mechanisms, does not require supervision by the Technical Inspection Authority (UDT). It is not necessary to register it with the UDT or subject it to annual inspections carried out by the authority’s inspectors. However, training in their operation within the workplace will be necessary, and in some cases a driving licence will be required.

Interestingly, Technical Inspection Authority examinations have only been required for a few years. Since when has UDT certification been required for forklift trucks? A certificate has been required to operate them since 2019. It is issued on a timely basis.

Are qualifications required for electric pallet trucks?

Electric pallet trucks with an electric drive and a lifting mechanism of up to 30 cm are useful tools in various industries. The good news is that no special licence is required to operate these trucks. Nevertheless, to ensure safety in the workplace, it is recommended that staff undergo training and adhere to safety rules.

How do you obtain UDT certification?

To obtain UDT certification, it is not necessary to complete a specific course (though it is certainly worth doing so to ensure you pass the exam without any issues). The exam will be held at your local Technical Inspection Authority office. To sit the exam, you must obtain a medical certificate confirming there are no medical contraindications to practising the profession and pay a fee of PLN 184.43.

Summary

For which forklifts is a UDT licence not required? You do not need a certificate for industrial machinery without a lifting system or with a lifting system other than a mechanical one. With this in mind, owners of small and medium-sized businesses often opt for hand-operated forklifts and electric pallet trucks, which can be operated by any employee following in-house training.
