Stump grinders are designed to remove the remains of felled trees without digging out the root ball or using chemicals. A rotating cutting wheel fitted with carbide-tipped teeth grinds the wood into chips, working below ground level so that the area can be prepared for a new lawn or planting. Stump grinders are ideal for grounds maintenance, local authority work, forestry and site preparation for construction projects. A petrol engine drives a cutting wheel, typically around 300 mm in diameter, fitted with several hardened cutting teeth. The operator moves the machine from side to side, gradually grinding away the stump and larger roots layer by layer. Typical models can grind to approximately 225 mm below ground level and reach over 500 mm above it, allowing them to tackle both low stumps and taller remains left after tree felling. High engine torque is more important here than power output alone, as it determines the machine's ability to work through hardwood. Protective guards help shield the operator from flying wood fragments.
Tree stump grinders are useful for clearing sites after tree felling, preparing ground for foundations, paving or fencing, and maintaining parks, roadside verges and communal grounds. Root grinders can also remove regrowth and shallow root systems that interfere with mowing. For landscaping and gardening contractors, a tree stump grinder is a natural addition to their services, as stump removal is usually charged separately from tree felling and can quickly recover the cost of purchasing the equipment.
When selecting a model, consider engine power and displacement, cutting wheel diameter and thickness, the number of cutting teeth and, above all, the maximum grinding depth and height, as these determine the machine's practical working range. Machine weight is also important, affecting transportation and manoeuvrability through narrow gates.
